Preserving Life: How Air Pollution Impacts Families in Brussels

What to Expect:

Health, Equity, and Policy

Marie Meudec, Social Scientist at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp

In this session, we will explore the connections between public health, race, and inequality. While the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights prohibit discrimination, these protections are now at risk following the European Commission’s withdrawal of the Equal Treatment Directive.

Marie Meudec, Social Scientist at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, will share powerful insights from the Race-Conscious Research and Data (RECoRD) project. This project uncovers how the lack of good health data on racially minoritized groups in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands creates real harm. We’ll examine how European health research addresses race and ethnicity—and explore ways to advocate for more inclusive approaches to research and policy.

Marie Meudec has over 20 years of experience researching health issues through an equity lens. Her work spans academia, immigration, and racial discrimination consulting, with teaching positions in Canada and Haiti. With a strong focus on marginalized communities, Marie is dedicated to advancing public health policies that promote social and racial justice.

Planetary Health: What Does the Future Hold for Us?

João Antonucci Rezende (any pronouns), Intersectional Activist

Where are we headed if we don’t treat pollution seriously? Are we doomed? What can we do? In this section we will explore these questions, to better grasp the future that is waiting for us if we don’t deal with the systemic struggles that threaten our society. Not everything is lost, but it’s time to take action and start limiting human pollution!

To understand these challenges, we will use a historic technique of collective learning developed by oppressed communities in 19th-century France to popularize knowledge: the practice of “Arpentage.” Through this method of collective reading, we will demystify the topic, analyze it, and engage our own personal experiences to interpret it with a critical perspective, finding solutions to our world’s problems.

João Antonucci Rezende (any pronouns) is an intersectional activist specialized in environmentalism and anti-ableism. They have an academic and professional background in environmental management, having worked for environmental NGOs on European policies. João is a proud “zinneke” who spends their days organizing protests, marches, and actions throughout Belgium. They have a particular interest in non-formal learning, trying to make complex topics accessible to everybody.
